Observing

Thank you so much for taking this time to observe our classrooms.  We are sure you will learn much, but also have many new questions!

The 'Prepared Environment' is an important aspect of Montessori, carefully designed to foster the independence of the children within it.  While adults are key aspect of this prepared environment, they are there to serve the child.  We have specific tikanga/protocols which we ask all visitors to respect.

Please make use of the visitors chair the teacher will show you.  As much as possible your presence should not interrupt the children's flow of work;

Children are responsible for choosing and putting away their own work;

Children may choose any activity that is not currently in use and that they have been shown how to use by a teacher;

If children would like to work with another child, they ask before joining in;

Use a quiet voice inside;

Walk around the classroom and around any work on mats;

Tuck in your chair;

Please do not sit on tables.

While some of our tikanga/protocols may seem a little strange, they are key to preserving the independence and engagement the children and also maintain the sense of community. Thank you for respecting our rules and helping to reinforce them with your child.

We have created these guides to help you get the most out of your experience.

Hints on getting the most of your observation

While the classroom is working, teachers are dedicated to the children, however will try to answer your questions at the conclusion of your observation.

We hope you enjoy your observation.  We look forward to sharing our excitement in being a part of your child's growing years.
